You would be hard-pressed to find a woman who has never encountered a mansplainer. From colleagues at work and family at home to strangers in public and acquaintances online, if you’re a woman, odds are high you’ve been mansplained. While mansplaining is a widespread issue, some parts of the country have higher concentrations of men just waiting to give unsolicited advice.

JeffBet surveyed over 2,000 women across the U.S. about the mansplaining they regularly encounter, how often and where they encounter it, which topics men mansplain the most, and their experiences dating and working with mansplainers. By indexing these factors together, we were able to identify the cities and states where the odds of encountering a mansplainer in the wild are the highest.

While women don’t need a study like this to ‘splain how widespread mansplaining is, hopefully, this data can add some statistical validation to this all-too-common and frustrating experience. Read on for some data-backed findings on the state of mansplaining in America!

Key Takeaways

  • Portland, OR, Albuquerque, NM, and Boston, MA, are the top three cities with the most mansplainers.
  • 83% of women say they have more relevant experience than the mansplainers they encounter.
  • 52% of women encounter mansplaining weekly at an average of 3 encounters per week.
  • 73% of women think mansplainers are unaware of their mansplaining.

The Mansplaining Capitals of America

With 68% of women experiencing mansplaining on a weekly basis, Oregon pans out as one of two states tying for the #1 state with the most mansplainers. Also vying for the top spot is West Virginia, where 67% of women encounter mansplaining weekly. In both states, women experience mansplaining an average of 4 times per week. In Oregon, 72% of women have dated a mansplainer, and 74% have in West Virginia. Working with mansplainers is common in these states, too. A whopping 90% in Oregon and 83% in West Virginia have worked with a mansplainer.

Oklahoma, Alabama, and New Mexico are also home to a plethora of mansplainers. In Oklahoma, 63% of women are mansplained weekly, averaging 4 mansplains per week. In Alabama, 69% have dated a mansplainer, and in New Mexico, 89% have worked with one.

On the more respectful side, New Jersey, Wisconsin, and Connecticut have far fewer mansplainers. A far smaller 43% of women are mansplained weekly in New Jersey, averaging 2 mansplains per week. In Wisconsin, 78% have worked with a mansplainer, and in Connecticut, 38% have dated one.

Oregon is the state with the most mansplainers, and Portland, OR, is the mansplaining capital of America. In this city, 72% of women are mansplained weekly, averaging 4 mansplains per week. A whopping 90% have worked with a mansplainer, and 67% have dated one.

New Mexico is the fifth-most mansplaining state in America, and Albuquerque, NM, is the country’s second most mansplaining capital. Averaging 3 mansplains per week, 50% of women in Albuquerque experience weekly mansplaining. Nearly half (49%) have dated a mansplainer, and 74% have worked with one.

Similarly, Massachusetts pans out as the seventh-most mansplaining state, and Boston lands the title of the country’s third most mansplaining city. In Boston, 62% of women encounter mansplaining on a weekly basis, averaging 4 mansplains per week.

On the more humble side, Philadelphia, New Orleans, and Indianapolis are the cities with the fewest mansplainers. At an average of 2 mansplains per week, 42% of women in Philadelphia encounter mansplaining weekly. In New Orleans, 55% have dated a mansplainer, and in Indianapolis, 44% are mansplained weekly at an average of 2 mansplains per week.

How Often Men Mansplain and What Women Think About It

Zooming out, we find that an average of 52% of American women experience mansplaining weekly, averaging 3 encounters per week. Still, a whopping 1 in 10 American women say they experience mansplaining every day. An average of 56% of American women have dated a mansplainer, and 79% have worked with a mansplainer in the U.S.

With mansplaining so prevalent, it’s no wonder that 73% of women think men are unaware when they are mansplaining. That especially makes sense when combined with the fact that 83% of women say they have more relevant experience than the mansplainers they encounter.

However, 60% of women say they’ve called out mansplaining in the moment. With so many men likely unaware of their mansplaining and so many women calling them out in the moment, there appears to be a lack of comprehension on behalf of men to gain awareness about this issue.

The Most Common Sources of Mansplaining

When examining the locations and topics where women experience mansplaining most, the workplace is the #1 location, with over half (56%) encountering mansplaining at work. Close behind is family, with 54% of women experiencing mansplaining at home. In a distant third is public spaces like at the grocery store, mechanic, or during a night out, where 42% of women encounter mansplaining.

Since work is the #1 location for women to experience mansplaining, it comes as no surprise that a woman’s work or expertise is the #1 topic in which women encounter mansplaining. A whopping 59% of American women say they’ve been mansplained to about their work or professional expertise. Politics and current events is in a close second place, with 57% of women saying they’ve experienced mansplaining on this subject.

As far as demographics go, most (69%) women say men begin to mansplain between the ages of 18 and 26. Peak mansplaining, or the age at which men most commonly mansplain, hits between the ages of 27 and 42, according to 52% of American women. Another 33% say that peak mansplaining hits between the ages of 43 to 58.

The Names and Relations Most Commonly Associated With Mansplaining

We also polled for the names and relations of the men most guilty of mansplaining to our respondents. Out of the over 2,000 women surveyed, one clear takeaway emerged that male coworkers are the most guilty of mansplaining.

A full 182 coworkers were named as the relationship of the man most guilty of mansplaining to respondents. That far outpaces the #2 relation source of mansplaining — friends — only 114 friends were named. Husbands are in a close third, with 112 women citing their spouses as the men most guilty of mansplaining.

Surprisingly, one name swept the board for being associated with mansplaining the most. The name John was cited 74 times by respondents as the name of the man most guilty of mansplaining. This is far more than the #2 name, Mike, with only 45 women naming Mike as the most guilty mansplainer. Close behind Mike, with 41 respondents calling them out, is Chris.

Methodology

We surveyed 2,030 American women from October 15 to 21, 2024, about the mansplaining they regularly encounter, including the frequency of mansplaining, the number of topics, and experiences with mansplainers in dating, work, and the respondent’s location. We analyzed responses from 40 of 50 states; 10 states were excluded from the state-by-state analysis due to low sample size. We analyzed responses from 23 of 49 cities surveyed; 26 cities were excluded from the city analysis due to low sample size.
