The-states-most-annoyed-by-in-laws

It finally happens . . . you meet the love of your life and you decide you are ready to settle down, but then they introduce you to their parents. For some people, in-laws are a great extension of the family, but they may cause others to question their relationship.

From criticizing your parenting choices to sparking disagreements with your partner, in-laws have a bad reputation when it comes to annoying their children’s spouses. We know a thing or two about getting lucky, so we set out to learn which states have won the lottery when it comes to in-laws.

We surveyed Americans in relationships in each state and asked a variety of questions about their interactions with their in-laws. Using these responses, we created an annoyance score on a scale of 0 to 100, with 100 representing the most annoyed. Read on to see if other residents of your state feel the same about their in-laws as you feel about yours.

Key Takeaways

  • Oklahoma, Alabama, and Washington residents are the most likely to be annoyed by their in-laws.
  • 1 in 4 Americans say they are often annoyed by their in-laws.
  • 2 in 5 Americans say they purposely avoid seeing or talking to their in-laws when possible.
  • Americans’ in-laws are most likely to criticize them about their lifestyle choices and their relationship with their partner.
  • Playing the victim and violating boundaries are the most common negative experiences Americans have with their in-laws.
  • 2 in 5 Americans have skipped family events due to their in-laws’ behavior.

Where Americans Are Most and Least Annoyed by Their In-Laws

Although many Americans have close, loving relationships with their in-laws, not all have been so lucky. For some, interacting with in-laws is a stressful experience that fills them with dread. In first place for the state most annoyed by their in-laws is Oklahoma. Residents of the state are the most likely in the country to say they purposely avoid seeing or talking to their in-laws whenever possible. Additionally, Oklahoma residents are the most likely to have completely cut off contact with their in-laws altogether.

Coming in second with an annoyance score of 94.7 out of 100 is Alabama where 1 in 5 residents say they have a bad relationship with their in-laws. In third is Washington with a score of 94.4 out of 100. Likely contributing to this annoyance is criticisms endured by residents of The Evergreen State, as we discovered they are the most likely in the U.S. to be criticized by their in-laws for their cooking, appearance, and politics.

West Virginia is next on the list, ranking fourth with an annoyance score of 88.3 out of 100. Washington residents are not the only ones feeling the weight of their in-laws’ criticisms, as we found West Virginia residents are the most likely to be criticized for their finances. Additionally, the residents’ in-laws are more likely than any other state to criticize their relationship with their partner. In fifth place is Arizona, where residents are the most likely to argue with their partner due to their in-laws’ behavior.

While lower on the list, ranking eighth, California residents are the most likely to have considered separation or divorce due to their in-laws’ behavior. And ranking 12th on the list, Maine residents have skipped family events due to their in-laws’ behavior more than any other state.

Americans’ Most Common Experiences with In-Laws

After uncovering the parts of the country that are most annoyed by their in-laws, we set out to learn what causes this irritation. Coming in first for the most common negative experience that two-fifths of Americans report is their in-laws playing the victim.

Many of us have heard the horror stories online or even watched them play out on TV. A person fabricates or exaggerates a situation to make themselves the victim when they are not, but for some married people, this is a regular occurrence in life with their in-laws.

Second on the list, with nearly 2 in 5 people reporting it is in-laws violating their boundaries. From asking inappropriate questions to physically touching when asked not to, there are endless ways in-laws have found to violate boundaries. Up next, in third, more than a third of Americans say their in-laws gossip about them.

In fourth place, we discovered 1 in 3 people say their in-laws manipulate their partner. While some couples enjoy the input of their partners’ parents, others would like to keep decisions between the two of them, with no outside influence.

In fifth place is another experience similar to violating boundaries, invading privacy, which 1 in 3 people report. Whether it’s showing up to your home unannounced or going through your personal belongings, having your privacy invaded, especially by people you should be able to trust, can be incredibly annoying.

The Most Common Things Americans’ In-Laws Criticize Them About

Most-common-criticisms

In unveiling the negative experiences Americans have, we found 1 in 6 people say their in-laws constantly criticized them. So with this in mind, we asked respondents to share the topics for which they are most often critiqued. In first place, with more than a third reporting it is their lifestyle choices. From the food they eat, how often work out, and even the hobbies they enjoy, many people find their in-laws questioning nearly everything they do.

In second place, with 1 in 3 people saying their in-laws critique it, is their relationship with their partner. While sometimes relationship advice can be helpful and appreciated, it is best to keep it to yourself unless requested.

Coming in third, 1 in 4 people say they receive criticism about their parenting. Raising a child is no easy journey. While grandparents can offer parents a welcome reprieve, they can also cause more stress with unwelcome questioning about their parental choices or rules.

The fourth through seventh most common criticisms — politics, finances, career, and appearance — all fall closely together as 1 in 4 people each experience them. In eighth place, we have a criticism that many people experience around the holidays, the appearance of one’s home. From the selection of decorations to the cleanliness of every corner, there are many in-laws who never fail to find something to comment on.

Methodology

In this study, we set out to learn where Americans are most annoyed by their in-laws. To do this, we surveyed Americans in each state to learn about their relationship with their in-laws. We asked a variety of questions including how they view their relationship, how often their in-laws criticize them, ways they have avoided their in-laws, and more. Using these responses, we awarded points that represented annoyance and then calculated the average score by state. Finally, we adjusted those scores on a scale of 0 to 100, with 100 representing the most annoyed.
